One of the highlights of our trip to Indonesia was the hike we made to Kawah Ijen in East Java. This beautiful active volcano hosts a sulfur-mining operation, with miners going through the grueling work of extracting and manually carrying loads of 90 kg (200 lb) crystallized sulfur from the crater down to the base.
After enduring what has to be the world’s bumpiest road, our little car somehow made it to the trailhead, where we bought gifts for the miners and started ascending the volcano. While we struggled to make it to the top, the sprightly miners lapped us – some wearing only flip flops!
At the top, we broke through a low layer of clouds and were greeted to the magnificent view of Ijen’s steaming crater and emerald green crater lake.
